Whale shaped scoop

When Zed and I spent a day together recently filming a tutorial on how to make these whale shaped scoops was firmly on the cards.  You can see the full video on Zed's You Tube channel

Carve a Whale Scoop

Scoops are essentially spoons with deep bowls and as such can be made with the same tool set.  Their deep bowls offer the carver a few challenges in terms of tool access and needing to carve end grain in the deep bowl walls.  To solve these issues I employ a scorp tool which is a loop of steel which encompasses a left and right hand blade giving me access to all quarters of the bowl as well as coping well with the end grain issue as the blades can be presented to carve in the correct direction.  Pairing a left and right handed spoon knife can also be used for deep scoops.

I use the wonderful scorps made by Lee Stoffer

You can purchase whale scoops in the Oneday Woodcraft shop

Hi Chris
I really enjoyed the video with Zed. Do you have a template download for the whale tale scoop?

Hi Orlando,
Lee had some tools with him for the big show but I don't know when he'll have any for sale on his website. There will be the usual newsletter notification when they are available I'm sure!
